What are dental implants?

Updated: Apr 9, 2021

Dental implants can be a permanent solution to replacing missing or damaged teeth. They are designed to support one or more false teeth. Dental implants are essentially titanium screws that replace the root of the tooth that is missing. Similar to a tooth root, the dental implant is placed directly into the jawbone. If you are looking to get dental implants then visit us at The Garden Dental Practice where we will be more than happy to assist you.

Different types of dental implants

You have two options of dental implants Golders Green: a single tooth dental implant or multiple dental implants. You may choose to have a single tooth dental implant to replace a missing or broken tooth caused either by natural causes or an accident. Often our patients require a single tooth dental implant as an emergency procedure.

Multiple dental implants can be used to replace a number of your natural teeth. If you lose multiple teeth this will have a negative impact on the rest of your teeth and your general mouth health, leading to gum disease and the possibility of losing the rest of your teeth. Dental implants Golders Green offer a long-lasting and discreet choice of treatment for replacing your missing teeth.

The dental implants procedure

In order to have your dental implants fitted you will need to have at least three appointments. The first appointment is the initial diagnostic stage where we will take CT scans and radiographs of your jaw and natural teeth to ensure that the dental implant procedure is suitable for you. On the second appointment, the implant will be fitted into your jawbone and then the final appointment will be a few months after the first, once your jaw has had time to heal. At the final appointment the new tooth will be fitted onto the implant. We will put you under local anaesthetic and give you additional sedation medication, if you require, to ensure that you have a comfortable experience with us throughout your treatment..

Benefits of having dental implants

One of the main benefits of dental implants Golders Green is that once they are fitted, they look just like your natural teeth, so you will not be able to tell the difference between the implants and your original teeth. Also dental implants behave exactly like your natural teeth and as they are placed firmly into your jawbone, they will provide your teeth with strength and natural functioning. If you care for your dental implants they can last practically for a lifetime therefore making them more financially viable and cost effective in the long run, particularly when you compare the price with other restorative treatments that are not as long lasting. Caring for your implants is simple - ensure to brush and floss twice a day as you would your natural teeth. An additional benefit of dental implants is that you will not be limited in what you can eat and drink and you will be able to continue to enjoy your favourite foods.

Drawbacks of having dental implants

The main drawback of having dental implants is that it is an expensive procedure which is not available under the NHS, except under special circumstances. Your dentist will be able to explain the effects and risks to you in greater detail at your initial consultation.
